Since this idea was consistent with the basic tenets of hypnosis, it intrigued me.

"Hypnosis is a way to access the untapped power of the mind and alter brain functions. In this state of intense relaxation and concentration, the mind is able to focus on positive suggestions which can be carried out at a future time. These subliminal messages are surprisingly powerful."

"The mind is like an onion. The outer layer, or conscious mind, deals with intelligence, reality, and logic. The inner mind is concerned with emotion, imagination, and memory, as well as the autonomic nervous system which automatically controls our internal organs (i.e., how we breathe, send oxygen to our blood cells, or walk without using the conscious mind.) The internal mind is on autopilot, reacting to the dictates of the pleasure principle. It seeks pleasure and avoids pain"
(Warren, 2003, pp. 175-6).
<img width='1' height='1' simple as that.

Anxiety is a “flight or fight response”. Sometimes this response is left over from some past experience, and it has then generalized this experience to other things. Things technically not related to that fearful experience, but that may have been present in the environment when that fearful event took place.

When we are stressed and anxious, we feel our heart race, breathing is high in the chest and shallow, fingers become numb and tingly, we sweat, our neck and face become red, we can’t think, concentrate or focus.

ALL of these symptoms are simply a result of not enough oxygen in our system.

The key to lowering stress and getting rid of anxiety reactions is simply getting more oxygen in the body.

The simple fact is: You cannot be excited, anxious and fearful, and at the same time you are relaxed, calm and peaceful. (Try it. Try to feel those two groups of emotions at the same time. It simply is impossible. The body cannot do this.)

How do we get more oxygen in the body when we need to, or choose to, be more calm and relaxed?

The following Relaxation Breathing exercise is the answer. You can choose to be as calm and relaxed as you wish, when you wish, anytime, anyplace. You can be in control of your level of relaxation.

You have a muscle that crosses your body, beneath your lungs, called the diaphragm. When you breathe in this muscle pulls down, drawing air into the lungs like a bellows or a plunger. This muscle helps you take air into your lungs. When you walk fast, or run, or do physical work, you can feel this muscle automatically kick in, and you feel your belly expanding so you can inhale more air. This happens normally and naturally.

Learning to use this muscle with each deep breath is the key to your relaxation.

Follow the exercise on the next page and learn how to be a more relaxed and calm

person, as relaxed and calm as YOU choose to be.

Relaxation Breathing

Once you know how, this Relaxation Breathing exercise should be practiced at least once per day. Practice at bedtime to use to fall easily asleep. Use anytime, anywhere, whenever you feel the slightest feeling of stress.

Sit or lye down, make yourself comfortable. Place one or both hands on your belly, just above your naval, and below your rib cage. Take a Deep breath, allow your belly to initiate or start the breath. Allow your belly to fully expand with your intake of breath. You may notice your lower back arching slightly as you inhale.

Then on the exhale allow your belly to push the air out of your lungs. Allowing the belly to start and gently force the air back out of your lungs.

Notice that with your hands on your belly you can feel your belly expand on the inhale and contract on the exhale. As you breathe deeply and slowly, simply observe and feel your belly gently move in and out.

Repeat this exercise for 10 Breaths. Practice for 10 breaths every night at bedtime.

This will help you fall asleep. Also use daily several times a day.

You can use this breathing technique to reduce stress and anxiety wherever you are, whatever you are doing. Use it sitting, standing, walking, driving…

The more you use it, the better it works. The more you use it the faster it works.

The more you use it, the less likely you are to have an episode of anxiety, panic or stress.

The more you use it, the body and mind learns to quickly and immediately go into relaxation.

Remember: the body cannot be excited, anxious and fearful, at the same time it is relaxed, calm and peaceful.

MyHealthNews/MSNBC.com

Hypnosis for Health:

The Daily Briefing: Health Providers push Hypnosis as cure.

A growing body of research suggests that hypnosis can reduce chronic pain and lower health care costs. Notice nature while you walk. Notice squirrels, birds, your neighbors gardens and homes. Relax while you walk. walking is very soothing to the mind and body. It naturally induces a meditative state, soothing even sore muscles and tight backs and shoulders. Fresh air is rejuvinating as well.

2. Notice feelings. Are you unhappy? Is there something in your life that is not a good fit? Is it time to change that? Write those feelings down on paper and explore them. Sometimes this helps in defining the core of the unhappiness. Then take a new page and write down ideally how you want that job, person, daily life to be. Only write "what you do want". Write only the postives.

3. Take yourself on a one day holiday, "Me Day". Call in sick to work. Take yourself out to breakfast or lunch, read the newspaper lesuirely and watch the other people go off to work. Take yourself to a movie. Take a leisurely bubble bath. Do what you want to do for a day. Taking a "Me Day" often has the positive benefit of heading off a cold or illness that will then force you to take one to several days off work when you're feeling run down.

4. Always focus on the positive. Happiness is a choice. Focus on the first postive thing you think of, (I saw a Robin on my lawn today), and build from there. We are what we think about most of the time. Focusing on postive thoughts increases the seratonin and endorphins in our system and elevates out mood naturally. We feel better when we think better.

Social Anxiety ??

Ever go someplace and start to feel uncomfortably funny? "That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin. OR the one that causes someone else's: "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can," she said. About 443,000 Americans die from tobacco-caused illness every year. About 46 million adults -one in five- still smoke, and tens of millions more are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke. It's become clear that some of the harms- especially those involving the heart-kick in right a3way, said Dr. Terry Pechacek of the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. That means social smoking, the occasional cigarette at a party, can be enough to trigger a heart attack in someone whose arteries already are silently clogged, he said. The brain is most capable of focusing on one thing at a time and doing it well. When we think we are multi tasking, we are really just rapidly shifting focus back and forth between two tasks, or attending to one task and barely attending to a second one. The result is we have two things done with less than good effort, almost always with errors and poor quality.

It is best to assess what you wish to accomplish first. Prioritize activities and tasks. Then focus on one at a time. You will get just as much done or more, with a better quality outcome and good attention to detail. Your focus and concentration will be better. You will feel more calm and centered.

It is good to remind yourself: "There is always enough time for everything I need to do". If you answer this statement with a 'no there isn't', then you need to take control and prioritize your activities. What is more important to accomplish today? What is reasonable to accomplish in the time I have. Let the less important thing go.

People often tell me, "I dont't have enough time to excercise, but I want to." If excercise is important to you, find out how much time you want to spend excercising. Ask yourself how important is this in my day? For example, is it more important than doing the dishes. If so move it up your list of priorities for the day. Make it a priority. Another tip: find out what kind of excercise you LIKE to do. Ignore what anyone elso thinks you should do. If you do what you like in excercise it will easily become your priority and you will do it.

Remember, use the postivie affirmation: "There is always enough time. There is always enough time for everything I want to do."

Hypnosis a Powerful Tool in Complementary Cancer Care

Complementary therapies, while not given the attention that more traditional cancer therapies may receive, are perhaps equally important while undergoing treatment for certain types of cancer. Patients diagnosed with difficult to treat malignancies will often use these types of therapies in conjunction with traditional surgical, chemotherapeutic, or radiology techniques to form a more comprehensive and effective treatment regimen. Among the most important and effective alternative therapies utilized by those diagnosed with cancer is hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy has been used for many years in clinical settings. Hypnotherapy’s role in cancer management however, is relatively new and indications are that its utilization has not been fully maximized yet. Effective cancer treatment often depends on the patient’s ability to not only defeat the cancer through treatments but also to maintain their health and mental spirit throughout the painful side effects of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Often, the symptoms and effects of the cancer itself on the body are negligible compared to the pain and other side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. This is where acupuncture has been said to be most effective. Cancers such as peritoneal mesothelioma, which are often unable to be removed by surgical means, are often treated with some combination of chemotherapy and radiation. While these potent therapies can be effective in eliminating some of the tumor mass and growth, they also profoundly effect the health of the surrounding tissue. Symptoms of these effects including fever, nausea, and general pain have been dramatically reduced through the utilization of hypnosis. Patients, who are able to withstand these symptoms and recover quickly, will often be able to be more aggressively treated, increasing the efficacy of the treatment regimen as a whole. Some specific hypnotherapy techniques utilized in pain management include altering the neurophysical configuration of pain, control of anticipatory anxiety, and targeted imagery.

Hypnotherapy techniques may not be appropriate for all patient’s pain and individual symptoms but it’s certainly worth exploring as it can do very little harm in experimenting with integrative therapies. The goal with alternative therapies, as with traditional mesothelioma treatments, is always to increase the effectiveness of treatment as a whole. If hypnotherapy can assist in any way in helping patients recover or manage symptoms of chemotherapy or radiation, then it will have contributed to the treatment regimens overall efficacy and should certainly be utilized.

References: Erickson MH: Hypnosis in painful terminal illness, in Haley J (ed): Advanced Techniques of Hypnosis and Therapy: Selected Papers of Milton Erickson, MD. An imaging study of hypnotised participants showed decreased activity in the parts of the brain linked with daydreaming or letting the mind wander. The same brain patterns were absent in people who had the tests but who were not susceptible to being hypnotised.
One psychologist said the study backed the theory that hypnosis "primes" the brain to be open to suggestion. Hypnosis is increasingly being used to help people stop smoking or lose weight and advisers recently recommended its use on the NHS to treat irritable bowel syndrome.

"This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation", Dr William McGeown, study leader. It is not the first time researchers have tried to use imaging studies to monitor brain activity in people under hypnosis. But the Hull team said these had been done while people had been asked to carry out tasks, so it was not clear whether the changes in the brain were due to the act of doing the task or an effect of hypnosis.

In the latest study, the team first tested how people responded to hypnosis and selected 10 individuals who were "highly suggestible" and seven people who did not really respond to the technique other than becoming more relaxed. The participants were asked to do a task under hypnosis, such as listening to non-existent music, but unknown to them the brain activity was being monitored in the rest periods in between tasks, the team reported in the journal Consciousness and Cognition.

In the "highly suggestible" group there was decreased activity in the part of the brain involved in daydreaming or letting the mind wander - also known as the "default mode" network.
One suggestion of how hypnosis works, supported by the results, is that shutting off this activity leaves the brain free to concentrate on other tasks. Study leader Dr William McGeown, a lecturer in the department of psychology, said the results were unequivocal because they only occurred in the highly suggestible subjects. "This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation. "Our study shows hypnosis is real."

Dr Michael Heap, a clinical forensic psychologist based in Sheffield, said the experiment was unique in showing brain patterns supporting the theory that hypnosis works by "priming" the subject to respond more effectively to suggestions. "Importantly the data confirm that relaxation is not a critical factor. The limited data from this experiment suggest that this pattern of activity then dissipates (at least to some extent) once the subjects start to engage in the suggestions that follow." But he said the small study, which needed repeating in other populations, did not prove that people being hypnotised were in an actual "trance".

Story from BBC NEWS:http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/health/8359170.stmPublished: 2009/11/16 00:19:32 GMT

Why Does Hypnosis Work

Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy works because literally your thoughts control your body, mind and spirit. Your thoughts control your world, everything from your health, your emotions, to your future. You are what you think you are. You are who you think you are.

" First , the science of Signal Transduction focuses upon the bio-chemical pathways by which cells respond to environmental cues. Environmental signals engage cytoplasmic processes that can alter gene expression and thereby control cell fate, influence cell movement, control cell survival, or even sentence a cell to death. Signal transduction science recognizes that the fate and behavior of an organism is directly linked to its perception of the environment. In simple terms, the character of your life is based upon how we perceive it.

Second, the new science of Epigenetics, which literally means 'control above the genes,' has completely upended our conventional understanding of genetics control. Epigenetics is the science of how environmental signals select, modify, and regulate gene activity. Retell your experience of what you thought, felt and experienced about an event in the greatest detail. Give yourself the permission to express your opinion without censoring or concerns about what others would think about what you’ve written. This notebook is for your eyes only and to share only if you wish to.

Letter Writing – Write a letter to someone with the intention that the letter will never be sent to them. This allows you to express your thoughts and feelings very truthfully as you are injuring no one with your candid expressions of how you feel and what you think.

Positive Affirmations / Positive Self Talk – Use positive statements of your goals and desires. Statements that are stated in the first person, and present time, in a positive manner. These statements are stated in such a way as if the goal is already accomplished.
(Examples: I am a Non-smoker; I eat healthy foods; I enjoy daily excercise; I am calm and relaxed).

Assertiveness – Practice stating how you feel about an event or interaction with another person. Use the formula: 1. Name the behavior. 2. State how that makes you feel. 3.State how you want their behavior to change. (Example: When you speak to me in that tone of voice, it makes me feel angry and defensive. Please use a calm tone of voice when you need to tell me how to do something).

Take Time – Take time to respond to an emotional situation. You do not have to respond to situations immediately. Taking time gives you a chance to sort out your feelings and make a choice about how you respond and what you choose to say to someone. Even if it takes a month or a year to sort out your feelings regarding an incident. It is never to late to return to the subject and process it, telling someone how you feel about it and the effect it had on you.

Amelia Hasenohrl, LPC, CHt. And let us further assume that our body is capable of maintaining a state of balance. And even when we feel sick or are challenged with a disease, even then most of our billions and billions of cells are functioning properly and healthy. Our body somehow knows how to maintain a balance while constantly and simultaneously millions of inter- and intracellular processes take place. The simple fact that tears cried due to happiness have quite a different chemical consistence than tears cried from pain or grief shows us how amazingly differentiated our bodily responses are and how much inner wisdom our body has. And it is ours to access.

Now, when health is a state of balance and disease is a state of imbalance, and then healing is the process of re-turning to a balanced state. This means the body is working to re-establish harmony while using all available sources to reach this goal. Would it therefore be appropriate - and in a sense, be respectful toward ourselves, to see all healing as self-healing?

What would it be like when we were to change our point of view and intentionally utilize the healing powers within; while using the various forms of treatments and approaches as possibilities to assist us on the road of self-healing?

Through a study done by the Institute of Heart Math it was discovered that the DNA changes it shape according to feelings felt by the researchers. When gratitude, love, and appreciation were felt, the DNA responded by relaxing, the strands unwound and the DNA became longer. When the researchers felt anger, fear, frustration, or stress, the DNA responded by tightening up, becoming shorter and even switching off some of the DNA codes. This effect was reversed and the codes were switched on again when feelings of love, joy, and appreciation were felt by the researchers.

What have these results to do with healing and self-healing? Each cell in our body has a strand of DNA, within which - among many other things - the information of a healthy, properly functioning cell is located. And since we are in charge of what to think or feel, we can support our healing process by learning to relax - regardless of the environment - and use all our senses and abilities to envision and feel the perfect outcome.

By: Okka Holthuis / http://us.mc827.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=okka@luxmani.com http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=PBKyx&m=1fPVFLgAKVjnxj&b=LbnXJqlyiM_HbpLMy0G1ZA

Changes Your Body Goes Through When You Quit Smoking

Within 20 minutes of the last cigarette:· Blood pressure drops to normal· Pulse rate drops to normal· Body temperature of hands and feet increases to normal

8 Hours:· Carbon Monoxide level in blood drops to normal· Oxygen level in blood increases to normal

24 Hours:· Chances of a heart attack decreases

48 Hours:· Nerve endings start to re-grow

72 Hours:· Bronchial tubes relax, making breathing easier· Lung capacity increases

2 Weeks to 3 Months:· Circulation improves. For instance, if consciously you are saying to yourself, "I want to lose 30 lbs.", and your subconscious is saying, "I like this extra padding, it keeps people from approaching me and I feel less vulnerable and threatened", you are going to hang on to that weight, or you may lose it for a while and gain it right back. Your subconscious must be in agreement with your conscious desires and goals to be successful. How is Hypnotherapy different from Hypnosis ?They are one and the same. They are interchangeable terms. However, I use Hypnotherapy because I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and also have a counseling profession with a hospital. I feel that I also use my counseling skills when I work with my clients to solve their problems. Hypnosis is a very quick, easy and effective counseling tool. What about Stage Hypnosis ?Stage hypnosis is the most common impression of hypnosis. This is the entertainment where a Hypnotist leads people into doing things on stage such as clucking like a chicken, or dancing suggestively, etc. Keep in mind that these people volunteer for this and they secretly want to be on stage and perform for the audience. You have to be willing to be hypnotized. You cannot be hypnotized against your will.

What Does Hypnosis Feel Like ?

What does Hypnosis Feel Like? When you are in Hypnosis, you feel very, very relaxed, as relaxed as when you are asleep, only you are still awake. You are always in control, and always aware of your surroundings if you care to be. Hypnosis can feel like deep meditation, daydreaming, and how you feel just before you fall asleep. All of these states of mind are similar to what is experienced in hypnosis. We have all experienced daydreaming. When we are daydreaming, we are deeply involved in the scenery of our daydream and although we are aware of our surroundings, being in a classroom for instance, we are choosing not to attend to the classroom around us during our daydreaming experience. What is Trance or “under” Hypnosis ? Trance is that daydream-like state that is induced in hypnosis. It feels very pleasant, carefree and deeply restful. Being in hypnosis trance is relaxing and refreshing, like a great afternoon nap.Being “under” hypnosis, or going “under” hypnosis is the same as being “in” hypnosis or hypnotic trance. The term under is not readily used now because it gives the idea that you are “under” someone else’s control. As you recall, you cannot be hypnotized unless you want to be hypnotized, so you are never “under” someone else’s control.

Be A Non Smoker with Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a fast easy way of stopping smoking without the use of chemicals, prescription durgs or patches. A portion of the article is below. The whole article can be found at http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/05.08/01-hypnosis.html

Marie McBrown was invited to test whether or not hypnosis would help heal the scars from her breast surgery. Marie (not her real name) and 17 other women underwent surgery to reduce their breast size.
It's a common operation for women whose breasts are large enough to cause back and shoulder strain, interfere with routine tasks, or prompt social and psychological problems. The pain and course of healing from such surgery is well-known, and a team of researchers headed by Carol Ginandes of Harvard Medical School and Patricia Brooks of the Union Institute in Cincinnati wanted to determine if hypnosis could speed wound healing and recovery.
"Hypnosis has been used in Western medicine for more than 150 years to treat everything from anxiety to pain, from easing the nausea of cancer chemotherapy to enhancing sports performance," Ginandes says.
A list of applications she provides includes treatment of phobias, panic, low self-esteem, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, stress, smoking, colitis, warts, headaches, and high blood pressure.

"All these functional uses may help a person feel better," Ginandes continues. "I am also interested in using hypnosis to help people get better physically. That means using the mind to make structural changes in the body, to accelerate healing at the tissue level."
Four years ago, Ginandes and Daniel Rosenthal, professor of radiology at the Harvard Medical School, published a report on their study of hypnosis to speed up the mending of broken bones. They recruited 12 people with broken ankles who did not require surgery and who received the usual treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In addition, Ginandes hypnotized half of them once a week for 12 weeks, while the other half received only normal treatment. The same doctor applied the casts and other care, and the same radiologists took regular X-rays to monitor how well they healed. A radiologist who evaluated the X-rays did not know which patients underwent hypnosis. The result stood out like a sore ankle.

Those who were hypnotized healed faster

Weight Loss Made Easy with Hypnosis

Dieting is not always the best alternative for those who want to lose weight. I can offer a healthier alternative.

We all know that diets fail because they are not realistic, convenient and manageable. Hypnotherapy offers the solution. It is not a diet. Hypnotherapy effects lifestyle and changes in habit.

Hypnotherapy is direct communication between your conscious mind (the part that tells you that you want to be slim and fit) and your subconscious mind (the part that likes to sabotage your healthy eating habits because it has another agenda regarding chocolate cookies and ice cream). Hypnotherapy calms the battle. Hypnotherapy gets your subconscious mind and conscious mind to agree to the same healthy eating habits. It changes your living and eating habits from now on. Because hypnotherapy does this through a very relaxing process, it is easy, comfortable, effective and sustainable.

You become who you think you are. You become healthier, fitter, and trimmer. You eat healthy foods because your subconscious mind believes in it. You are more motivated to exercise because your subconscious mind believes it. With hypnotherapy you make positive lasting changes to your lifestyle from now forward.

Amelia Hasenohrl, MA, LPC, CHt.
Certified Hypnotherapist
Licensed Professional Counselor
