AnxietyBlog #3 The Triggers

AnxietyBlog #3

The Anxiety Triggers

What triggers your Anxiety?  What are Anxiety Triggers? How do they develop?
How do I get rid of them?

Your subconscious mind functions by firing your Flight Fight or Freeze reaction.
Flight Flight or Freeze is a Normal Natural Reaction. It’s our warning system of danger, it keeps us safe. When it works properly its great, when it works overtime it becomes a bad habit reaction. Triggered by sensory input.

Your Subconscious Mind is designed to Protect you, Keep you safe, and meet your needs, that’s its job.

The subconscious mind is best thought of as a an audio visual device or camera, Always on record. It is recording All of our experiences 24/7. Audio,Visual, Auditory, Sensory/Feeling.

So you experience and event or trauma: your subconscious mind records Everything about that experience, related to it and UNrelated to that event.

So for example: You have a car accident. Your brain, your subconscious mind records everything around that accident that happens. And also records Everything surrounding the accident that is Not directly related to that accident. For example, lets say there’s a guy walking by the accident wearing a red coat, UNrelated to the accident, but present.

So it’s 6-8 months later and let’s say you are walking downtown; it’s a sunny day, your with friends, near a cross walk, and you Consciously don’t notice but a guy walks by on the other side of the street wearing a red coat like the guy the day of the accident. Suddenly you are experiencing an Anxiety/Panic attack.

So if you decide to flee downtown, you have kept the “red coat guy” trigger for anxiety, and added a few more triggers, such as downtown, crosswalks, perhaps crowds downtown etc. ...

However if you stay, and perhaps sit down or just stand there, and use the diaphragmatic breathing technique** (Relaxation Breathing**), what you will notice is that your anxiety will go slightly up at first and then come steadily down until you are comfortable again.

What you have accomplished is HUGE. You have just eliminated the “guy in the red coat” trigger and prevented the addition of any additional triggers.

Each time you use Relaxation Breathing** in a stressful, anxiety provoking experience, you eliminate a trigger for stress and anxiety, and thus reduce your reaction to triggers. Experiences of anxiety become less and less. You become more and more in control of your level of relaxation. The more you use Relaxation Breathing the quicker it works, the better it works and the less likely you will react to that trigger in the future. it is always with you and available to you wherever you go.

You are more and more in control of your level of relaxation. Where’ve you are, whatever you are doing, whatever is going on around you.

** Relaxation Breathing MUST be diaphragmatic breathing!

Any other breathing technique will NOT work.

Relaxation Breathing

Relaxation Breathing

Once you know how, this Relaxation Breathing exercise should be practiced at least once per day. Practice at bedtime to use to fall easily asleep. Use anytime, anywhere, whenever you feel the slightest feeling of stress.

Sit or lye down, make yourself comfortable. Place one or both hands on your belly, just above your naval, and below your rib cage. Take a Deep breath, allow your belly to initiate or start the breath. Allow your belly to fully expand with your intake of breath. You may notice your lower back arching slightly as you inhale.

Then on the exhale allow your belly to push the air out of your lungs. Allowing the belly to start and gently force the air back out of your lungs.

Notice that with your hands on your belly you can feel your belly expand on the inhale and contract on the exhale. As you breathe deeply and slowly, simply observe and feel your belly gently move in and out.

Repeat this exercise for 10 Breaths. Practice for 10 breaths every night at bedtime.
This will help you fall asleep. Also use daily several times a day.

You can use this breathing technique to reduce stress and anxiety wherever you are, whatever you are doing. Use it sitting, standing, walking, driving…

The more you use it, the better it works. The more you use it the faster it works.
The more you use it, the less likely you are to have an episode of anxiety, panic or stress.

The more you use it, the body and mind learns to quickly and immediately go into relaxation.

Remember: the body cannot be excited, anxious and fearful, at the same time it is relaxed, calm and peaceful.

AnxietyBlog #1

AnxietyBlog #1

Welcome to the Anxiety Blog. So you have symptoms, sensations... like tingling in hands, feet, arms, legs; upset,”butterfly stomach”; tight chest, feels like you can’t catch your breath, we feel our heart race, breathing is high in the upper chest and shallow,  hands, we sweat, our neck and face become red, we can’t think, concentrate or focus, access to memory is limited.
Essentially we feel awful.

What is really going on in our bodies?

ALL of these symptoms are simply a result of not enough oxygen in our system.

The key to lowering stress and getting rid of anxiety reactions is simply getting more oxygen in the body.

The simple fact is: You cannot be excited, anxious and fearful, and at the same time that you are relaxed, calm and peaceful.  (Try it. Try to feel those two groups of emotions at the same time. It simply is impossible. The body cannot do this.)

How do we get more oxygen in the body when we need to, or choose to be, more calm and relaxed?

The following Relaxation Breathing exercise is the answer. You can choose to be as calm and relaxed as you wish, when you wish, anytime, anyplace. You can be in control of your level of relaxation.

You have a muscle that crosses your body, beneath your lungs, called the diaphragm. When you breathe in this muscle pulls down, drawing air into the lungs like a bellows or a plunger. This muscle helps you take air into your lungs. When you walk fast, or run, or do physical work, you can feel this muscle automatically kick in, and you feel your belly expanding so you can inhale more air. This happens normally and naturally. This is the natural breath you were born with.
Learning to use this muscle with each deep breath is the key to your relaxation.

Follow this exercise and learn how to be a more relaxed and calm
person, as relaxed and calm as YOU choose to be.

Once you know how, this Relaxation Breathing exercise should be practiced 6-8 times per day, until it once again becomes automatic, natural, the breath you are born with. Practice at bedtime to use it to fall easily asleep. Use anytime, anywhere, whenever you feel the slightest feeling of stress. Good times to practice: standing in line at the store, at a stop light in your car, in the waiting room of an office, on commercial breaks while watching a movie.

Relaxation Breathing Exercise:  Sit or lye down, make yourself comfortable. Place one or both hands on your belly, just above your naval, and below your rib cage, start your breath here.
Take a Deep breath, allow your belly to initiate or start the breath. Allow your belly to fully expand with your intake of breath. You may notice your lower back expanding slightly as you inhale.

Then on the exhale allow your belly to gently push the air out of your lungs.

Also use daily many times, 6-8 times a day.

You can use this breathing technique to reduce stress and anxiety wherever you are, whatever you are doing. Use it sitting, standing, walking, driving, sitting at a stop light, waiting in line…

The Positive Nuns

In September 22, 1930, the Mother Superior of the North American Sisters of Milwaukee, Wisconsin had young nuns around the country write 300 word essays about their lives. Most were in their early twenties at the time. The essays included significant life events and why they chose the religious life.

Sixty years later, a team of researchers from the University of Kentucky, in a study focusing on retired nuns, found 180 of the young nuns who wrote essays were in their study Groupon retired nuns.

After classifying their 180 essays as positive, negative or neutral, the researchers found a correlation between the nuns outlook on their life and their lifespans.
The nuns who’d been most positive in their essays on life, lived about ten years longer than those who had been the least positive.

The power of positive thinking.

Hypnosis is the power of changing your thought into powerful affirmations that work for you.

Strategies for a Happy Life

How to Be Happy
By Tara Parker-Pope @nytimeswell

Behavioral scientists have spent a lot of time studying what makes us happy (and what doesn’t). We know happiness can predict health and longevity, and happiness scales can be used to measure social progress and the success of public policies. But happiness isn’t something that just happens to you. Everyone has the power to make small changes in our behavior, our surroundings and our relationships that can help set us on course for a happier life.

Mind
Happiness often comes from within. Learn how to tame negative thoughts and approach every day with optimism.
CONQUER NEGATIVE THINKING

All humans have a tendency to be a bit more like Eeyore than Tigger, to ruminate more on bad experiences than positive ones. It’s an evolutionary adaptation — over-learning from the dangerous or hurtful situations we encounter through life (bullying, trauma, betrayal) helps us avoid them in the future and react quickly in a crisis.

But that means you have to work a little harder to train your brain to conquer negative thoughts. Here’s how:

Don’t try to stop negative thoughts. Telling yourself “I have to stop thinking about this,” only makes you think about it more. Instead, own your worries. When you are in a negative cycle, acknowledge it. “I’m worrying about money.” “I’m obsessing about problems at work.”

Treat yourself like a friend. When you are feeling negative about yourself, ask yourself what advice would you give a friend who was down on herself. Now try to apply that advice to you.

Challenge your negative thoughts. Socratic questioning is the process of challenging and changing irrational thoughts. Studies show that this method can reduce depression symptoms. The goal is to get you from a negative mindset (“I’m a failure.”) to a more positive one (“I’ve had a lot of success in my career. This is just one setback that doesn’t reflect on me. I can learn from it and be better.”) Here are some examples of questions you can ask yourself to challenge negative thinking.

First, write down your negative thought, such as “I’m having problems at work and am questioning my abilities.”

Then ask yourself: “What is the evidence for this thought?”
“Am I basing this on facts? Or feelings?”
“Could I be misinterpreting the situation?”
“How might other people view the situation differently?
“How might I view this situation if it happened to someone else?”
The bottom line: Negative thinking happens to all of us, but if we recognize it and challenge that thinking, we are taking a big step toward a happier life.

CONTROLLED BREATHING

Science is just beginning to provide evidence that the benefits of this ancient practice are real. Studies have found, for example, that breathing practices can help reduce symptoms associated with anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and attention deficit disorder. For centuries yogis have used breath control, or pranayama, to promote concentration and improve vitality. Buddha advocated breath-meditation as a way to reach enlightenment.

Try it.
REWRITE YOUR STORY

Writing about oneself and personal experiences — and then rewriting your story — can lead to behavioral changes and improve happiness. (We already know that expressive writing can improve mood disorders and help reduce symptoms among cancer patients, among other health benefits.)

Some research suggests that writing in a personal journal for 15 minutes a day can lead to a boost in overall happiness and well-being, in part because it allows us to express our emotions, be mindful of our circumstances and resolve inner conflicts. Or you can take the next step and focus on one particular challenge you face, and write and rewrite that story.

We all have a personal narrative that shapes our view of the world and ourselves. But sometimes our inner voice doesn’t get it right. By writing and then editing our own stories, we can change our perceptions of ourselves and identify obstacles that stand in the way of our personal well-being. The process is similar to Socratic questioning (referenced above). Here’s a writing exercise:

Write a brief story about your struggle. I’m having money problems. I am having a hard time making friends in a new city. I’m never going to find love. I’m fighting with my spouse.
Now write a new story from the viewpoint of a neutral observer, or with the kind of encouragement you’d give a friend.
Money is a challenge but you can take steps to get yourself into financial shape.
Everyone struggles in their first year in a new city. Give it some time. Join some groups.
Don’t focus on finding love. Focus on meeting new people and having fun. The rest will follow.
Couples argue. Here’s what your situation looks like to a neutral observer.

Numerous studies show that writing and rewriting your story can move you out of your negative mindset and into a more positive view of life. “The idea here is getting people to come to terms with who they are, where they want to go,” said James Pennebaker, a psychology professor at the University of Texas who has pioneered much of the research on expressive writing.  “I think of expressive writing as a life course correction.”

GET MOVING

When people get up and move, even a little, they tend to be happier than when they are still. A study that tracked the movement and moods of cellphone users found that people reported the most happiness if they had been moving in the past 15 minutes than when they had been sitting or lying down. Most of the time it wasn’t rigorous activity but just gentle walking that left them in a good mood. Of course, we don’t know if moving makes you happy or if happy people just move more, but we do know that more activity goes hand-in-hand with better health and greater happiness.

PRACTICE OPTIMISM

Optimism is part genetic, part learned. Even if you were born into a family of gloomy Guses, you can still find your inner ray of sunshine. Optimism doesn’t mean ignoring the reality of a dire situation. After a job loss, for instance, many people may feel defeated and think, “I’ll never recover from this.” An optimist would acknowledge the challenge in a more hopeful way, saying, “This is going to be difficult, but it’s a chance to rethink my life goals and find work that truly makes me happy.”

And thinking positive thoughts and surrounding yourself with positive people really does help. Optimism, like pessimism, can be infectious. So make a point to hang out with optimistic people.

Strategies to Master Mindful Eating

As with any new habit, mindful eating takes practice. One of the ultimate goals of mindful eating is to stop eating when you are comfortably full or satisfied. To help you do this, follow the 13 strategies below next time you eat:

1. Pause before eating and ask yourself, “How hungry am I on a scale of 1 to 10?” One signifies “ravenous” while five is “satisfied” and ten is “sick to your stomach,” you’re so full.

2. Ask yourself, “How much food will fit comfortably in my stomach?” Then eat only that much, not more.

3. Pay close attention to the appearance, aroma, taste and texture of your food; savor each bite. Place your utensil down and sit back in your chair between bites and pay full attention to the flavor and texture of each one as you chew.

4. Take frequent breaks during meals. Take a deep breath and check in with your body to determine how full you are.

5. Chew slowly, mindfully, and thoroughly.

6. Finish chewing one bite of food before scooping another bite onto your fork or spoon. You can slow down, reduce your intake, and better enjoy the taste and experience of your food by paying full attention to one bite at a time.

8. Sip—don’t gulp—your beverage.

9. If you’re sharing your meal with others, engage in conversation with them.

10. Know that this will not be the last time you eat these foods because you can enjoy them again at another meal or snack, especially if you have leftovers.

11. Save leftovers for when you are hungry and need to fuel your body again.

12. If you find yourself continuing to eat once full, ask yourself “Does this food taste as good now that I’m full?”

13. Wait 10 to 15 minutes before going for seconds. You’ll be able to more accurately determine how full you are, since it takes this much time for your stomach to signal your brain.

Final Steps to a Mindful Meal

As soon as you are comfortably full, put down your fork and stop eating.  Sit back in your chair and enjoy the pleasant feeling of fullness. Then ask yourself the following questions:

What are you feeling?
Are you disappointed that you feel full?
Are you anxious or uncomfortable that you are not eating but others are?
Is it better to continue eating with others leading you to overeat, and feel guilty because you ate until you were uncomfortable?
Or, is it more pleasurable and rewarding to eat until satisfied, so that you feel content and proud for stopping at a comfortable level of fullness?
Carefully think about and examine how you feel during this experiment. Foster your curiosity about this experience and learn from it. It may help to journal about it, including your answers to the questions above

And remember, practice is key to mastering the art of mindful eating. Eating mindfully takes the “power” away from food and gives it back to its rightful owner: you. It helps you reconnect with the internal signals that enable you to eat normally, lose or maintain a healthy weight, and reach your health goals.

Being Mindful with Anger

Excellent New York Times article on Minfulness and Anger. Hypnosis can be an easier way to the same destination as deep meditation. Hypnosis is excellent for Anger management, stress, anxiety and PTSD. Diaphragmatic Breathing, Deep Belly Breathing is essential in emotional mindfulness and getting control of anger feelings. We can be mindful enough to make choices about our behaviors and verbal responses to anger feelings. Anger can be expressed in proactive and beneficial ways, through Assertive Communication for instance. These things can be learned easily and quickly. Hypnosis is Healthy, Natural, and Relaxing.

Anger can be a natural, life-affirming emotion, if you let it be.

What are we saying to Ourselves?

Positive Self Talk: We all talk to ourselves. It's How we talk to ourselves that makes the difference in our Happiness and Success. See this Psychology Today Article:
The Voice of Reason

Everyone engages in self-talk. But much depends on the way we do it. Scientists now find that the right words can free us from our fears and make us as wise about ourselves as we often are about others.

Perfect Yoga Pose for Relaxation and Anti-Anxiety

Magarasana:  Crocodile

The Perfect yoga pose for retraining your body to Relaxation Breathing Naturally.

Breathing normally and naturally is Very important to your level of relaxation and calmness; very important to your overall health.

When we breathe high in the chest area, we are not getting a full natural breath. Even if you breathe faster or slower, if you are breathing high in your chest (your upper chest, ribs and shoulders are moving when you breathe) you are not getting enough air. This will contribute to your stress, anxiety and fear level.

Normal Natural breath is a Diaphragmatic Breath or a Relaxation Breath, as I like to call it. This breath originates from the diaphragm muscle, which is located  across the body below the lungs. When you are breathing normally your stomach area below the rib cage and above the navel will rise and fall. The Diaphragmatic Breathe originates here.

For example, when you watch a toddler running around in their diaper, you will notice that their nice round little belly is easily and freely moving in and out. You do not see their upper chest, ribs and shoulders heaving up and down, right?
This is because they haven't yet experienced any trauma or drama in their lives. Observe this phenomenon the next chance you get.

Some people have been breathing so long in a "Fight, Flight or Freeze" breathe that they have difficulty getting back to a normal breath. For those people there is a simple exercise:
The Crocodile

This is a simple Relaxing yoga pose that anyone can do.

1.    First lay on your belly on the floor.  Put your legs about a few feet apart. Drop your heels inward,                     or move your legs to what is a comfortable position for you.

2.    Next put you arms in front of you, so that your upper chest is off the ground and hold onto your elbows, making a square with your arms. Rest your forehead on you top arm. Close your eyes and Relax, Breathe.

3.Notice that you feel only your legs, hips and lower abdomen on the floor.

This position provides a gentle compression to your lower stomach and abdomen that provides you with physical feedback on your diaphragmatic breathing. It helps you learn to do this correctly.

The gentle compression is very soothing and comforting. Slow and deepen your breathing.

This is a beautiful yoga pose for Self Calming and Restoring Natural Relaxed breathing. It is helpful for headache relief and calming digestion.

Strongly recommended for the treatment of Stress and Anxiety.

How to Remove the Three Key Blocks to Prosperity

There are three key blocks that keep you from having the level of prosperity that you desire. Prosperity is much more than money. It is about having a full and rich life in all areas of the Wheel of Life. To have a full and rich life all areas of life need to feel fulfilled. It is about balance and knowing that you deserve to have it all.

So to get a full and rich life is really pretty simple. Your ability to create a truly abundant life is depended upon how you think, feel and believe at a subconscious level most of the time. Those three factors create the vibration that you broadcast into the world which attracts your experiences.

To create what you want:
Think about what you want
1. Frequently
2. With feeling state intensity
3. Remove all blocks that stand in the way
4. Create inspired action

Until you get rid of the blocks deeply held at a subconscious level, you will not succeed. So the three key blocks are:
What you believe: Your belief system. This creates a glass ceiling over your life. Many of us have spent a lot of time money and energy on personal growth, but still have not achieved the level of Prosperity desired…why is that so? It is because it is not the conscious beliefs..it is the subconscious beliefs. Your mind is about 15% conscious and 85% subconscious. When you conscious and your subconscious disagree the subconscious always wins. The fasted and most effective way to change your belief system is to use mindful states such as meditation and hypnosis. Blocks need to be cleared on a subconscious level and the Belief System needs to be reprogrammed. I have a great handout called MEDITATION MADE EASY. Email me at zoilita@zoilitagrant.net I will send it to you.

How you think: what your self talk sounds like. Many of us have negative thought patterns and those patterns block prosperity. If you hear negative thoughts you can bet that there many more in the subconscious. Changing your self talk takes focus while you retrain your mind to be more positive.
To change your self talk you must become aware of it. If you hear voices in your head it does not mean you are crazy, it means you are self aware. Once you are aware, you can begin to consciously change your inner dialogue.
A good exercise is to take the time to list all the negative things you say to yourself. Then write a positive affirmation for each negative thought. When the old thoughts come up, stop them and repeat the positive affirmation. Learn self hypnosis and say your affirmation in a hypnosis state for even greater effect.
How You Feel:Your feelings have a profound effect on your vibration and determines what you attract into your life. When I talk about your feelings I mean 2 things. First there are the feelings that are generated by your current life, your reactions to situations and to your own self talk. But even more important are the feelings that are being carried from events from the past.
Eckart Tolle calls this the pain body. Whatever we called it, many people are carrying around a lot of unhappiness from the past. In hypnosis we say..the issues are in the tissues..the subconscious mind is literally the cells of the body. The cells store old emotions that need to be released and cleared.

So remember to get a Prosperous Life is really pretty simple. Your ability to create a truly abundant life is depended upon how you think, feel and believe at a subconscious level most of the time. Those three factors create the vibration that you broadcast into the world which attracts your experiences.

Now remember this: To get what you want think about what you want
1. Frequently
2. With feeling state intensity
3. Continued to remove all blocks that stand in the way
4. Create inspired action

Meditation and Hypnosis

Meditation is a wonderful thing and quite like the experience of hypnosis.

Jon Kabat - Zinn, Ph.D., neuro-scientist, University of Massachusett Medical School found meditation shifts brain activity from the right frontal cortex, which is more active when a person experiences stress, to the left frontal cortex, which is more active when a person is calm. This shift decreases the negative effects of stress and mild depression and anxiety.

Dr. Adrian White, University of Exeter, showed people who meditate have increased electrical activity in the frontal cortex, which indicates they are experiencing lower anxiety and a more positive mentall state. Meditation also reduces activity in the amygdala where the brain produces fear.

Fear of the Dentist: How Hypnosis Can Make It Better

Fear of the Dentist: How Hypnosis can make it better.

Do you have a Fear of the Dentist?

I did. In the past all I needed to do was walk in and sit in the dentist chair and I would break out in a full body sweat. I would involuntarily grip the arm rests of the chair with my fingernails.

Now I walk in sit down and relax for the next hour. I utilize the simple calming techniques I utilize in the Hypnotherapy I practice. When I have a procedure: teeth cleaning, crown, etc. I utilize one of my hypnosis recordings to relax further, while cooperating with the dentist and dental procedure. My experience is much more pleasant and relaxing. The procedure seems to fly by. The crown was and hour and forty minutes, with use of the recording I thought I was in the chair just forty minutes. It was more relaxing than a cleaning.

Still need convincing? Check out these two videos on dental hypnosis:
